Do you recall my post last year on saying yes to God? I do. But I had to read it again to find out what I was afraid of. To be honest, a lot of my fears were fears of the flesh, and now that I have hindsight, I realise that saying yes was the right choice, and it will always be the right choice.
You can read ‘A Dangerous Yes’ here
Here are some fears that I have countered with truth, I find that many of us Christians have similar fears, I hope this encourages you to obey God promptly when He speaks to you.
Fear One: Fear of the Unknown
Truth: It is Known to someone
I was afraid of starting somewhere new, somewhere strange and far away. It was known to people that lived there. Why do we fear the unknown? Why don’t we leap forward in faith, after all, there is no new thing or experience under the sun! It may be unknown to us but it will be known to someone else, we just need wisdom and Godly counsel.
‘What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.’ Ecclesiastes 1:9
Fear Two: No One to turn to on Bad days
Truth: Call God on bad days
Don’t get me wrong; on bad days I routinely write down my worries, cry, eat ice cream like I did here, and give it to God. That has not changed. I never went to anyone’s house crying on a bad day; I just liked knowing people were close by. We need to turn to God instead of turning to humans to fix our problems. Also, when we run to humans, we need friends who will re-direct us to God.
‘Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.’ Psalm 55:2
Fear Three: I won’t find a Church
Truth: You are a Church
I love the gathering of believers; I know some Christians who take the above fact literarily and avoid all congregations, but that is not what I am talking about, we as individuals are the Church. We need to know God for ourselves, not what the Pastor says on Sunday, or at Bible study, not what the hip ‘new age preacher’ says on YouTube. When last did you open your Bible, and sit quietly with God for one hour? No music, no phone, no preacher? Just you and God? Yes, I did find a Church, and an awesome Bible study and home group, but I found a rhythm, dwelling in God’s presence too!!
‘Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.’ 2 Timothy 2:15
Fear Four: My needs won’t be met
Truth: God is a giver of great gifts
How afraid I was, that I will be secluded, that my interests will fade and die away, that I will not find good food or a good apartment. But, I found good food, and I cook fantastic food, and my dream of being house proud was fulfilled. He met all my needs and even my selfish wants and desires. God will meet your ‘needs’, He promised to do so, and if your wants are in line with His will, He pledged to give them to you too, you need not fear.
‘But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.’ Philippians 4:19
Fear Five: God wasn’t thinking about me
Truth: He always wants what’s best for me
God is faithful, and He will always see you through, but obedience is paramount. Your desires cannot outdo God’s best plans for you. But you need to trust Him, and for you to trust Him, you need to know Him, and for you to know Him, you have to study Him and His word.
“If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land” Is 1:19Your desires cannot outdo God's best plans for you. Click To Tweet
I hope this has encouraged you to say yes to God. I know you may be afraid of the unknown, I know your plans may collide with what He is calling you to do. But God has a beautiful purpose waiting on the other side of your obedience.God has a beautiful purpose waiting on the other side of your obedience Click To Tweet
What fears do you have in obeying God? Heather Lindsey once said she was afraid saying yes to God will mean having to marry a man she was not attracted to. What about you what fears to do you have?
